Media Theory notes
Knowledge into media theory, knowledge of animation methodology and its contexts.
Context is history behind work, understanding its creation reason and looking at a work from all angles. How does it relate socially, what happened when the work came out, how was the work received, where do the ideas come from.
Moving image: how does moving image relate in social context, how does moving image relate to technological context, what do we relate moving image to, what are key canonical works in moving image???
Marshall McLuhan (works 1962-75)
Medium is the massage: message, massage, mass-age, mess-age
Massage is loosening, media and tv is loosening us. It’s messy out here, its our job to figure out where we are in this age. What you print is nothing compared to the effect of the printed word. The printed word sets a paradigm a structure of awareness which affects everybody. Lots of things online are performative, all the worlds a stage, we are parented by others online.
Guy Debord and Marshall McLuhan, wrote their books during an era without social media but post-war. During the consumer boom. In the context of post war, there were movements against consumerism and media selling lifestyles. The Situationist International they sought to create moments of truth and real experiences outside of this consumerist life. They would disrupt moments for free without a consumerist POV to allow everyone to experience media. McLuhan was overtly critical he expressed admiration for the beauty of media as well.
Media is an extension of our body, that they extend or exaggerate forms of our sensory perception. We are changed by media and we need to be aware of this. We have to look away from our practices and consider where we want them to go and what they mean.
Most of the internet revolves around corporations and their offshoots, it’s a map of them. We all use the internet but what does it actually look like. They are these server banks and satellites physically. Media technologies, you need to consider whats behind them. MASS SURVEILLANCE think of wire traps, security cameras, metadata and internet activity. Government taps the cables on the ocean floor to survey people.
French New Wave Cinema, express over impress like Hollywood. However, still using media to express artistic tendencies through films without big budgeted productions, its about stepping away from the big glamour to communicate normalcy. We have to find somewhere on the scale of impress and express where we sit and what our limits are.
To read is to guess. It’s about personal interpretation, quick reading is good response and decision making.
