Animation process

I did a more detailed version of my storyboard using procreate so I could make edits. I used red to show camera and character movement. I tried to vary the angles and perspectives to make my animation more interesting, I also tried to do both character and camera movement to make it more interesting.

I started to look for colour palettes using Coolors, and I used the colours in a test image to feel the vibe. I was aiming for a comfy feeling so when I initially chose the blue tones I was thinking of colours I liked. I didn’t want to use pure black or white as I felt it would make the animation flat. I received some feedback from my friend who studies animation at LCC and she agreed the warmer palette was better.

Initially the cats were going to have separate colour schemes but after experimenting I liked the idea of them being opposites like Yin and Yang.

Then using these colours I coloured in my storyboard to see how the colour scheme would work in the bigger picture and would it be cohesive.

I then used this to make an animatic.

Initially, I was going to use procreate to animate but I realised that it would not do enough frames for at least 10 seconds so I researched free animation softwares and I decided to use Flip a Clip.

This is a snapshot from my current progress.

Day before submission for the exhibition I was working on my animation and I was almost finished. However, it was 4am and I was really tired and I had managed to delete all of my animation, I had been exporting it through out and managed to have back most of it but the work I had done in the last intense 48 hours was gone. There is no recovery on Flip a Clip no matter how hard I tried. I wasn’t able to participate in the exhibition on the Friday and I was really upset so I didn’t go into class for the rest of the week as I struggled with the fact I lost lots of work. Now I am starting to get back on it but it is still a struggle as I expected to be done with this project a week ago and I haven’t had time to do sound yet.

This is what the animation looked like just after I lost it. It is only about 50% done in comparison the one I lost was about 90%. I had been using feedback from my animation student friends and they said it was good.
