I did this class at home because I was still doing the Layered Worlds project so this is my catch up work.
Semiotics is a new word to me, despite doing product and packaging design before. But in essence, it is about how meaning is created and shared through imagery. Communicating ideas is big with my course, and I need to develop knowledge and skills on how to do this visually. I am aware that different imagery and symbols can have different meaning to different audiences so this means I need to research my topics thoroughly.
I have chosen a new parent as my target audience. I built a character profile based on this. This is important because it will help me to create designs that appeal to my target consumer, in result benefits to me are: targeted content, customer loyalty, boosted sales, and better customer service.

I really enjoyed making this consumer profile because it felt like I was crafting a storybook character. I enjoy story writing anyways, but being able to do in in an illustrative way was fun. Also, I could write anything because there is no real life repercussions. I also decided to use a sketching brush on procreate to do this so it felt fun and informal which has been a nice change from the intensity of completing my last project.
I chose water as the word to make connections to.

I enjoyed this exercise because it allowed me to explore my target audience in a new way. Usually I think about customer needs and likes. I usually go through a scientific sort of method, but by exploring the customer through their connection to an element of nature was really interesting and I think I will use it again in the future.

I explored the topic of new parents further to see what would be useful in my research. I then made a mood-board using the keywords from the mind-map, I tried to emulate the atmosphere, colour scheme, and even products related to the consumer.
