In order to understand what utopia is and what constitutes the ideal perfect society, I visited the Women in revolt exhibit at the Tate Britain. I wanted to research why the current world we live in isn’t considered a utopia. A utopia is a world where everything progresses perfectly: socially and technologically. so I knew I had to research things not to include in my final pieces. My research has shown that utopia would be almost nothing like the world we currently live in, although it is subject to change per each persons view. For example, some women, may say a utopia would be one that has women in charge, in a matriarchal sense. A total loss of the current world we live in, but some people may say we need total quality, but at the same time, some people may say we need equity.
These were some of my favourite images because of the the depths and the symbolism shown in the sequence of photos, of it being in black-and-white, but also what messages are being conveyed because so many things almost screaming at the viewer of the image about what’s wrong in the world. If we considered this artwork to represent a dystopian world, there’s lots of black and white and high contrast, depressing imagery, so for my final piece, I will include lots of colour. although this style is what I would consider to be in my usual comfort zone, I will need to work outside of my comfort zone which is kind of interesting because people, or me as the artist, would have to sacrifice things in order to create a utopia. Even though in theory, a perfect world people don’t need to sacrifice things..I really love the imagery in this form because it’s the idea that if Mary from the Bible and Christianity would look down onto our world, she would be outraged at the treatment women get and I think that’s true, even though I’m not religious myself it just shows how messed up our world is, and how the inequality is completely nonsensical. Some people would say an extreme representation of how bad things are in the world, whereas I would say it’s accurate because it’s exactly what is happening, so I need to create a world that Mary would look down on and be happy. This makes me think of Ancient Greek mythology how Artemis the hunter wanted equality, and justice, for women and she would stop at nothing to achieve that, and she too would be outraged if she looked down on Earth and saw the treatment women get.I wish i was flexible like thisMmmh i feel like i relate This is just so ew like no
I visited with my mother to see the exhibition, it was quite busy which made me feel happy knowing many people want to see this kind of media but it saddens me because it’s clear that exhibitions like this need to happen more often and be more accessible (in terms of pricing). I was really pissed off during this exhibition for multiple reasons. A lot of the things these women were fighting for has not changed a single bit today and some of these things happened 50+ years ago. Also because it was so busy it made it really difficult to concentrate on the content and I could see this with many of the others there so a lot of the exhibit is missed.
